Discuss the process of measuring oil heater wattage.

Introduction

In the previous course NMH29 Chiller Fundamentals the trainee learned how to adjust the

thermostat for the oil sump heater.

In this objective the trainee will learn how to check the amperage of the oil immersion heater,

design heater wattage is 1000 watts.

Additionally, you will review CRDR# 2553858 Several Normal chillers have tripped recently due to

low lube oil pressure. The oil sump set point changes are covered in D MWO# 2569741.

Assess and address work place hazards.

You will be measuring current and voltage.

Caution - Error Likely situation!!

The oil sump hea ter is not powere d from the Aux Power Pa nel.

The oil heater for the Essential Chillers is pow ered from the 100 ft. Control Bldg. Ess Switchgear

and the Normal Chillers are powered from the 140 ft. Aux Bldg East wrap, D panel.

1) Verifying oil is present in the sump prior to energizing the heater.

2) Obtain the voltage and current values.

a) calculate the heater wattage per the following:(design heater wattage-1000 watts.)

b) P = E X I where: P = heater power in watts

E = voltage as measured.

I = current as measured.
